How often does carpet flooring need to be cleaned?

It's important to toake care of your carpet, which can last 20 years or more. Mine lasted for 23 years–and that was while raising a puppy!

Carpets require two types of cleaning. Both have different timetables.

Routine vacuuming should be done at least once a week

Preferably more if you have kids and pets. You might also stagger the vacuum times; for instance, you might vacuum high-traffic areas more often than you would bedrooms.

Vacuuming is vital because it extends your carpet's lifespan. However, dirt and sand can be sharp and fray the fibers and backing.

You also want to vacuum your carpet slowly, going over the high-traffic areas several times.

Don't have a vacuum? No excuses–you can still clean them with a carpet sweeper or broom.

Wipe spills as needed

The last thing you want is a spill to set into a stain. Blot as soon as spills happen.

Professional deep cleaning– every 12 to 18 months

Carpet fibers trap particles. They remain there until the rug is deep cleaned so that they won't circulate in the air.

A dirty rug looks dull and matted and impedes airflow. That exacerbates allergies and asthma.
