When you visit our tile flooring store, you'll be pleasantly overwhelmed by the large assortment of colors, designs, shapes, and sizes.

It's important to remember that not all tiles are the same.

Technically, anything that includes clay is considered a type of ceramic. That's even if the composition includes sand and glass.

But they all have different strengths and absorption levels, determining how and where they can be used. So, choose carefully. The right or wrong tile flooring will make or break your project.

Porcelain tile: durable and stylish

Porcelain tile includes clay, sand, and glass. It's also fired at a higher temperature than most ceramics.

This tile is heavier, denser, and ideal for busy rooms like the kitchen. The clay is also non-absorbent so that porcelain can be used indoors and outdoors.

This large format product comes in a large variety of colors and patterns. It's often the preferred choice for wood or stone looks.

Other types of ceramics include:

  1. The 4 X 4 square: These are highly designed and glazed. Thinner but tough, they're great for moderately busy indoor floors, countertops, fireplace surrounds, backsplashes, etc. Look for Category 3, the most common strength used in residential applications.
  2. Mosaics: When shopping for tile in St. Croix Falls, I consider a mosaic for your bathroom floor. Mosaics are highly decorative, often glass-coated, durable, and mold/mildew resistant. Some to explore in our inventory include Revalia or Retro Rounds, both by Dal-tile.
  3. Terracotta bricks: Highly durable with that gorgeous reddish-brown color that's so great for rustic decor. These can be used indoors or out.
  4. Subway tiles: These were the formerly all-white 4 X 6 rectangles. They now come in all colors, shapes and sizes. These are best used indoors on walls or low-traffic floors.
